Marcel Durand (1933 – 2022)

Marcel Durand was born in 1933 in a small village in Normandy, France. His family’s passion for palaeontology stretched back to his grandfather, Henri Durand, who first began collecting fossils along the chalk cliffs of the region in the early 1900s. The tradition was passed to Marcel’s father, Lucien, who expanded the family collection by cataloguing and preserving each find with meticulous care.

Marcel grew up spending weekends combing the beaches and quarries with his father, learning to identify ammonites, belemnites, and other fossils unique to the Normandy coast. But he also purchased fossils from across Europe.
