Description
This listing features a RARE and stunning 12.5-inch Heteroceras sp. heteromorph ammonite fossil from the Barremian Stage of the Early Cretaceous Period (~129–125 million years ago). This well-preserved specimen comes from Tamri, Morocco, a region renowned for its exceptional fossil deposits.
About Heteroceras:
Heteroceras belongs to the heteromorph ammonites—a unique group known for their uncoiled, irregularly shaped shells that differ from the tightly coiled shells of typical ammonites. This distinctive morphology likely influenced their mode of life, possibly floating rather than swimming efficiently like their more streamlined relatives.
These remarkable cephalopods thrived in ancient marine environments during the Early Cretaceous, sharing the seas with early marine reptiles, bony fish, and other ammonites. Their ribbed ornamentation and complex suture patterns make them a favorite among collectors.
