Description

Three Ludwigia murchisonae Ammonites in a Jurassic Multi Block

Genuine Isle of Skye Fossil Specimen

This listing is for the exact fossil block shown in the photographs, containing three Ludwigia murchisonae ammonites. It is a genuine natural specimen from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, dating to the Aalenian Stage of the Middle Jurassic. The block has been carefully selected and individually photographed, so the piece pictured is the actual specimen you will receive. Please use the sizing photograph for full measurements and inspect every image for the arrangement, condition, matrix, colour and preserved detail of all three ammonites.

Aalenian Geology of Skye

The Aalenian Stage spans approximately 174 to 170 million years ago and forms the earliest part of the Middle Jurassic. During this interval, sediments accumulated in marine and coastal environments around the region now represented by the Inner Hebrides. The Isle of Skye preserves an exceptional sequence of Jurassic rocks that records changing seas, shorelines and ecosystems.

Fossil-bearing beds on Skye contain ammonites and other marine organisms that inhabited these ancient waters. A multi block holding several individuals provides a particularly engaging snapshot of the fossil assemblage. The shared matrix preserves the specimens together as they occur in the rock, giving the display both geological integrity and strong visual character.

About Ludwigia murchisonae

Ludwigia is an extinct genus of ammonoid cephalopod. Ammonites were marine molluscs with chambered, spirally coiled shells and belong to the wider cephalopod group that includes living squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. The living animal occupied the final body chamber, while earlier chambers separated by septa helped regulate buoyancy.

Ludwigia murchisonae is a characteristic ammonite of Aalenian strata. Its shell has successive whorls and distinct ribbing, creating a sculptural spiral form. Each of the three fossils in this block offers its own preservation and orientation. The photographs accurately show their natural morphology, mineral tones, surrounding matrix and completeness.

Scientific and Display Interest

Ammonites evolved rapidly and were widely distributed through Jurassic seas, making them valuable index fossils. Particular species help geologists compare rock layers and determine relative ages. Ludwigia murchisonae is closely linked with biostratigraphic study of the Aalenian, so a documented example carries scientific and educational interest.

This three-ammonite block is well suited to a palaeontology collection, Scottish fossil display, geology teaching cabinet or distinctive gift. Multiple specimens on one natural matrix create an attractive composition, while the named species, Middle Jurassic age and Isle of Skye provenance give the piece important context.

Exact Specimen and Authenticity

You will receive the exact multi block pictured, not a stock example. Fossils are natural geological objects and may retain ancient fractures, matrix, mineral variation, weathering or preparation marks. These features form part of the specimen’s authentic history. Review all photographs carefully and use the sizing image for dimensions.

A generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee is included. The fossil block will be packed carefully for safe transit and protection of the condition shown.
