Description

3 Inch Rooted Spinosaur Dinosaur Tooth from the Kem Kem Beds
This impressive 3-inch rooted Spinosaur dinosaur tooth fossil originates from the famous Kem Kem Beds within the Tegana Formation of the Kem Kem Basin, Morocco. Dating to the Upper Cretaceous period, specifically the Cenomanian stage approximately 100–94 million years ago, this specimen represents one of the most distinctive and specialised predatory dinosaurs ever discovered. The fossil shown in the photograph is the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its size, preservation, and striking natural appearance.

Geological Context – Tegana Formation, Kem Kem Basin
The Kem Kem Beds are a globally recognised fossil locality, formed within a vast river and delta system that existed during the Late Cretaceous. The Tegana Formation consists primarily of fluvial sandstones and siltstones deposited by ancient river channels, floodplains, and estuarine environments connected to the Tethys Ocean. This region supported a rich and diverse ecosystem, including large theropods, herbivorous dinosaurs, crocodilians, fish, and flying reptiles.

The sedimentary conditions allowed for rapid burial of remains, particularly in river channels, preserving robust fossil material such as teeth and bones in exceptional detail.

Fossil Type and Taxonomic Classification
This tooth is attributed to a member of the family Spinosauridae, a group of theropod dinosaurs known for their elongated skulls, conical teeth, and semi-aquatic adaptations. Spinosaurs, including genera such as Spinosaurus, are believed to have been specialised fish-eaters, making them unique among large theropod dinosaurs.

Spinosaurids belong to the order Saurischia and the clade Theropoda. Their fossils are highly prized due to their rarity and their distinctive adaptations to aquatic or semi-aquatic environments.

Morphological Features and Notable Traits
This specimen is a rooted tooth, meaning it retains both the crown and the root, making it particularly desirable and more complete than isolated crowns. The tooth exhibits the classic conical, slightly curved shape typical of spinosaur dentition, designed for gripping rather than slicing.

Unlike many theropod teeth, spinosaur teeth lack serrations and instead feature a smooth enamel surface with fine longitudinal fluting. These ridges strengthen the tooth and improve grip on slippery prey such as fish. The preserved root provides additional anatomical detail, offering insight into how the tooth was anchored within the jaw.

At approximately 3 inches in length, this is a substantial specimen, showcasing the impressive size and predatory capability of these dinosaurs.

Depositional Environment and Preservation
The fossilisation process occurred in sediment-rich river systems where remains were rapidly buried by sand and silt. This rapid burial protected the tooth from scavenging and environmental damage. Over millions of years, mineralisation replaced the original biological material, preserving the tooth in stone while maintaining its structure and detail.

The Kem Kem Beds are particularly known for producing well-preserved spinosaur teeth, often retaining excellent surface detail and structural integrity.

Authenticity and Premium Certificate of Guarantee
This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity, providing lifetime assurance of its origin and legitimacy. Each specimen is carefully handled and prepared to preserve its natural condition, ensuring you receive a high-quality and authentic fossil.

Ideal for Collectors, Display, and Investment
A rooted Spinosaur tooth of this size is a standout addition to any fossil or dinosaur collection. Its completeness, size, and association with one of the most unusual theropods make it highly desirable for collectors and enthusiasts. Whether displayed in a cabinet, office, or educational setting, it offers a powerful connection to prehistoric life.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
