Geological Setting – Middle Bajocian, Jurassic of Burton Bradstock

This ammonite originates from the Middle Bajocian, approximately 168–170 million years ago, during the Middle Jurassic. At that time, Dorset lay beneath a warm, shallow tropical sea rich in marine life.

The Burton Bradstock coastline is part of the famous Jurassic Coast region, where Middle Jurassic sediments record a thriving marine ecosystem filled with ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, and other sea creatures. The sediments here were deposited in relatively calm offshore conditions, allowing shells to fossilise with excellent clarity.

The Bajocian rocks of Dorset are well known for their ammonite diversity and are widely studied for their importance in Jurassic stratigraphy.

Fossil Species – Parkinsonia Ammonite

Parkinsonia is one of the most iconic ammonite genera of the Middle Jurassic, belonging to the extinct subclass Ammonoidea, within the class Cephalopoda. Ammonites were highly successful marine molluscs related to modern squid and cuttlefish, and they were among the dominant predators of Jurassic seas.

Parkinsonia is especially valued for its elegant coiling, strong ribbing, and distinctive whorl shape. Specimens of this genus are important index fossils used by geologists to identify and correlate Bajocian-aged rock layers across Europe.

Because Parkinsonia is both scientifically significant and visually striking, it remains a favourite among collectors of classic British Jurassic ammonites.

Morphology and Display Features

This 3 inch specimen offers an excellent size for collectors, providing strong presence while retaining fine shell ornamentation. The ribbing and spiral geometry remain clearly visible, highlighting the natural beauty of ammonite shell architecture.

Ammonites such as Parkinsonia also preserve important evidence of ancient marine biodiversity, representing animals that lived as active swimmers in Jurassic seas over 165 million years ago.

This specimen is ideal for display in fossil cabinets, educational collections, or as a centrepiece for any Jurassic enthusiast.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
