Description
Offered for sale is an exquisite fossil ammonite specimen of Amoeboceras prionodoceras prionodes, a beautifully preserved cephalopod from the Upper Oxfordian stage of the Late Jurassic Period, approximately 157–163 million years old. This specimen was dredged from Weymouth Bay, Dorset, on the world-famous Jurassic Coast.
Amoeboceras is a genus of extinct ammonite belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea and the family Cardioceratidae, known for their strong ribbing and tight coiling. These ammonites lived in ancient marine environments and are valuable biostratigraphic indicators, particularly for the Late Jurassic.
The Oxfordian Stage marks the earliest part of the Upper Jurassic, characterised by diverse marine life including ammonites, marine reptiles, and early seabed ecosystems. Fossils from this time are particularly sought after for their quality and historic geological importance.
This specimen has been carefully curated and comes from the highly respected Alice Purnell Collection, known for housing rare and scientifically significant fossils. It has been professionally cleaned, prepared, and treated to preserve its detail and stability.
