Description
For sale is a beautifully preserved fossil ammonite specimen of Parkinsonia schloenbachia, an iconic ammonite species from the Middle Bajocian stage of the Jurassic Period, around 168 to 170 million years ago. This example was collected from the Osmington/Bridport area of Dorset, England—part of the world-renowned Jurassic Coast.
Parkinsonia is a genus of large, evolute ammonites, characterised by pronounced ribbing and a wide shell diameter. Specimens like this are often used as index fossils to date the surrounding rock layers due to their wide distribution and rapid evolutionary development.
This species, P. schloenbachia, is a striking representation of Middle Jurassic marine life. These cephalopods thrived in warm, shallow epicontinental seas and played a vital role in Jurassic marine ecosystems.
The fossil comes from the esteemed Alice Purnell Collection, known for its focus on high-quality and rare UK fossils. It has been expertly cleaned and conserved to showcase its natural detail and form.
