4″ Sonninia patella Fossil Ammonite – Laeviuscula Zone, Inferior Oolite, Middle Bajocian, Jurassic: Dorset, UK – Alice Purnell Collection

£120.00

This listing features an exceptional 4-inch fossil ammonite specimen of the species Sonninia patella, collected from the Laeviuscula Zone of the Middle Bajocian Stage, Inferior Oolite Formation, near Frogden Oborne, Sherborne, Dorset, UK.

Sonninia patella belongs to a genus of extinct cephalopods in the subclass Ammonoidea, known for their involute, tightly coiled shells with intricate ribbing. These marine molluscs thrived in the warm seas that covered much of Europe during the Middle Jurassic, around 170 million years ago. The species is significant for its use in biostratigraphy, helping geologists and paleontologists to date and correlate rock layers.

The specimen originates from the world-renowned Inferior Oolite Formation, a Middle Jurassic marine limestone unit rich in diverse fossil fauna. The Laeviuscula Zone is a key ammonite-bearing subunit of this formation, frequently yielding well-preserved examples of important ammonite taxa.

This piece is part of the respected Alice Purnell Collection, celebrated for its scientific value and aesthetic fossil selections. The ammonite has been expertly cleaned and prepped to highlight the fine detail of its shell structure, making it a superb addition to any fossil collection, whether for educational, display, or research purposes.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
