Description

Genuine 5 Inch Belemnite Fossil

This listing is for a genuine 5 inch belemnite fossil from Blockley, Gloucestershire, UK, dating to the Pliensbachian Stage of the Jurassic Period. Belemnites are classic fossil marine cephalopods, closely related to modern squid and cuttlefish, and are among the most recognisable fossils found in British Jurassic rocks.

This fossil is a carefully chosen specimen, and the photograph shows the actual piece you will receive. Full sizing can be seen in the photo. The fossil is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, making it a fine addition to a fossil collection, natural history display, educational collection, or geology-themed gift selection.

Geology, Age and Gloucestershire Locality

This belemnite comes from Blockley, Gloucestershire, an area within the Cotswolds known for its fossil-bearing Jurassic sedimentary rocks. During the Early Jurassic, this part of Britain was covered by shallow marine waters connected to wider European seas. These ancient seas supported a rich ecosystem of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods, fish, and marine reptiles.

The fossil is Pliensbachian in age, placing it within the Early Jurassic, approximately 191 to 183 million years old. The Pliensbachian was an important interval in Jurassic marine history, with widespread deposition of muds, limestones, calcareous sediments, and shell-rich beds across what is now southern and central Britain. These sediments helped preserve the remains of many marine animals, creating the fossil-rich rocks collected and studied today.

Blockley and the surrounding Gloucestershire area are part of a classic British Jurassic landscape. Fossils from this region are popular with collectors because they represent a time when Britain was very different from today, with warm seas covering areas that are now countryside, villages, and limestone hills.

Fossil Type and Belemnite Details

Belemnites were extinct marine cephalopods belonging to Phylum Mollusca, Class Cephalopoda, and Order Belemnitida. Unlike ammonites, which carried coiled external shells, belemnites had an internal skeleton. The part most commonly preserved as a fossil is the dense, bullet-shaped guard, also known as the rostrum.

This specimen represents the durable belemnite guard, which originally formed part of the animal’s internal support and balance structure. In life, the belemnite would have had a soft body, tentacles, eyes, fins, and a streamlined form suited to active swimming. The guard helped stabilise the animal in the water and is often the most frequently fossilised part because it was composed of solid calcite.

Belemnite fossils are easily recognised by their elongated, tapering shape. Depending on preservation, examples may show natural growth lines, surface texture, mineral colour variation, calcite structure, or a pointed terminal end. Their distinctive appearance and close link to ancient marine ecosystems make them highly collectable for both new and experienced fossil enthusiasts.

Jurassic Marine Environment

During the Pliensbachian, the area now known as Gloucestershire lay beneath an Early Jurassic sea filled with swimming, crawling, burrowing, and bottom-dwelling animals. Belemnites were active predators, likely feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms. They also formed part of the food chain for larger predators, including marine reptiles.

The same waters would have contained ammonites moving through the water column, bivalves and brachiopods living on or within the seabed, and fish swimming through the shallow marine environment. Over time, the remains of these organisms were buried in sediment, mineralised, and preserved as fossils. This belemnite is a direct piece of that ancient marine world.
