Description
A beautifully preserved 5″ Lytoceras ammonite fossil from the renowned Beacon Limestone Formation, found at Ilminster, Somerset, UK. This classic Jurassic ammonite displays the smooth, planispiral shell structure typical of the genus, with its graceful whorls and natural calcite preservation.
This particular specimen was discovered by our expert field team, Alister and Alison, on 06 October 2024, and was carefully cleaned, prepared, and treated by Alison to reveal its fine detail.
Lytoceras is characterised by its evolute shell with smooth, rounded whorls and wide umbilicus, indicating a fast-moving, nektonic lifestyle. It is an important genus within the family Lytoceratidae, part of the superfamily Lytoceratoidea, and order Ammonitida.
The Beacon Limestone is a Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary unit, indicating deposition in a deepening offshore basin with good oxygenation and conditions suitable for ammonite preservation. These fossils are particularly prized from the Toarcian Stage, which provides insight into marine life following the early Jurassic extinction events.
