This beautifully preserved Mantelliceras ammonite fossil is an authentic marine cephalopod from the Cretaceous period, originating from Morocco. With a shell diameter of approximately 5 inches, it showcases the iconic ribbed morphology and coiled structure characteristic of the genus.

Mantelliceras is a genus of ammonite within the family Acanthoceratidae, commonly found in Cretaceous marine strata of North Africa and Europe. These ammonites are noted for their strong ribbing, involute shell, and typically compressed whorls.

This fossil dates to the Late Albian to Early Cenomanian stages of the Upper Cretaceous, around 100 to 95 million years ago, and was formed in an epicontinental seaway environment that once covered parts of what is now Morocco.

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
