5″ Polished Goniatite Fossil Devonian Morocco Authentic Cephalopod Display Slice

£72.00

This stunning 5″ polished Goniatite fossil comes from the Devonian-aged rocks of the Erfoud region in Southern Morocco. Goniatites are extinct ammonoid cephalopods that flourished in the Earth’s ancient oceans for over 150 million years, predating the more commonly known ammonites.

Expertly cut and polished, this fossil reveals the intricate inner chamber patterns of the shell, often exhibiting spiral symmetry and calcified chamber walls. These features make goniatites highly valued both scientifically and decoratively.

This particular fossil originates from the Middle Devonian period, dating back approximately 390 million years. The region where it was found—Erfoud, in the Tafilalt Basin—is a globally significant locality for marine Devonian fossils. The depositional environment was a warm, shallow marine shelf that supported an abundant and diverse marine fauna.

Devonian Information

The Devonian Period (419–359 million years ago), known as the "Age of Fishes," was a time of major evolutionary advances in both marine and terrestrial life. The oceans were dominated by armored placoderm fish, early sharks, and lobe-finned fish like Tiktaalik, which had features that helped vertebrates transition to land. Coral reefs flourished, and ammonites became more diverse. On land, the first forests appeared, with early trees like Archaeopteris, leading to a drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate cooling. The first tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) began evolving from fish, marking a critical step in the evolution of amphibians. The period ended with the Devonian extinction, likely caused by ocean anoxia and climate shifts, wiping out many marine species and reshaping ecosystems.
