Original price was: £180.00.Current price is: £162.00.

This listing features a superb 6.5-inch fossil ammonite of the species Strigoceras truellei, sourced from the Niortense Zone of the Middle Bajocian Stage in the Jurassic Period, approximately 170 million years ago. It was found in the fossil-rich coastal cliffs of West Bay / Burton Bradstock, Dorset, United Kingdom, a site that forms part of the globally renowned Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Strigoceras truellei is a distinctive ammonite species within the family Strigoceratidae, known for its finely ribbed, compressed shell and involute whorls. These ammonites thrived in the shallow tropical seas of the Jurassic and were part of a vibrant marine ecosystem dominated by invertebrates and early marine reptiles.

Geologically, this specimen originates from the Inferior Oolite Group, a Middle Jurassic limestone sequence formed from sediments deposited in warm, shallow marine environments. The Niortense Zone, in particular, is a key biostratigraphic marker within the Bajocian and has yielded some of the most visually striking and scientifically valuable ammonite specimens.

This beautiful ammonite comes from the distinguished Alice Purnell Collection, a highly regarded assemblage of scientifically important and visually exceptional fossil specimens gathered over decades. Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
