6″ BRASILIA BRADFORDENSIS Fossil Ammonite | Lower Aalenian Jurassic | Belgium | Authentic | Geological Collectible

£60.00

This stunning 6-inch Brasilia bradfordensis fossil ammonite originates from the Lower Aalenian Stage of the Jurassic Period, and was recovered in Belgium. A member of the extinct cephalopod order Ammonitida, this ammonite exhibits classic involute shell structure with strong ribbing, consistent with the diagnostic features of the genus Brasilia. This example comes from the Alice Purnell Collection, renowned for its high-quality, scientifically verified specimens.

Geological Age & Formation:

  • Geological Stage: Lower Aalenian (approx. 174 to 170 million years ago)
  • Location: Belgium
  • Depositional Environment: Marine shelf environment typical of early Middle Jurassic transgressive sequences

Taxonomy:

  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Hammatoceratoidea
  • Family: Hammatoceratidae
  • Genus & Species: Brasilia bradfordensis

Morphological Features:

  • Involute coiling with compressed whorls
  • Fine but well-defined radial ribs
  • Shell diameter: approx. 6 inches (15.2 cm)
  • High degree of preservation with excellent detail in suture lines and ribbing

Biozone & Stratigraphy (if applicable): Though precise zone identification may vary across regions, Brasilia bradfordensis is generally associated with the Bradfordensis Subzone of the Opalinum Zone, a biostratigraphic marker for the Lower Aalenian in northwest Europe.

Notable Facts:

  • Ammonites such as Brasilia were fast-swimming marine predators or scavengers.
  • Their shells offer key insights into paleoenvironments and global sea-level changes.
  • Specimens of this species are relatively rare in the commercial fossil market, especially at this size and level of preservation.

Item Notes:

  • The specimen shown in the photo is the exact piece you will receive.
  • Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm: Full sizing is detailed in the photo.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
