6″ Iridescent CYMATOCERAS Fossil Nautilus Cretaceous Aptian Madagascar Mahajanga Genuine Cephalopod Specimen

£540.00

A stunning 6-inch polished fossil specimen of the extinct nautiloid Cymatoceras, displaying natural iridescence preserved from the Aptian Stage of the Early Cretaceous period. This authentic cephalopod fossil originates from the world-renowned fossil beds near Mahajanga, Madagascar. Known for their excellent preservation and natural beauty, these nautiloids represent a prehistoric marine life form related to modern-day Nautilus.

Cymatoceras is characterised by a globular, involute shell with deep sutures and strong ribs. Its shell often exhibits nacreous luster, a result of fossilisation processes in fine carbonate-rich marine sediments. These features, along with the robust shell form, make it a highly collectible piece, particularly when sourced from the Aptian-aged deposits of Madagascar.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
