Description
This beautifully preserved 6-inch ammonite fossil belongs to the species Planisphinctes planilobus, dating back to the Lower Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic Period, approximately 167 million years ago. It was collected from the fossiliferous deposits at Burton Bradstock, a key locality on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, United Kingdom.
Planisphinctes ammonites are known for their finely ribbed, planispiral shells and evolved rapidly, making them important index fossils. These extinct cephalopods, closely related to modern-day squid and cuttlefish, once thrived in warm shallow seas that covered much of Europe during the Jurassic.
The fossil is part of the acclaimed Alice Purnell Collection, renowned for its carefully curated and scientifically valuable specimens. This ammonite has been professionally prepped and cleaned, displaying crisp shell detail and stunning preservation—ideal for collectors and display.
