Description
This exceptional 7-inch fossil specimen is a beautifully preserved Lytoceras fimbriatum ammonite from the Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic Period, dating back approximately 180 million years. Discovered along the famous Jurassic Coast at Eype, Dorset, UK, this fossil is a testament to the incredible marine biodiversity of ancient seas.
Lytoceras is part of the Lytoceratidae family, known for their smooth, involute shells with gently curved whorls and distinct suture patterns. Unlike many ribbed ammonites, Lytoceras fimbriatum exhibits fine ornamentation and a more refined, elegant form—making it both scientifically valuable and visually stunning. These ammonites were active swimmers and likely fast-moving carnivores, related to modern squid and octopus.
This specimen was carefully excavated by our own expert team members Alister and Alison on 19 July 2024 and has been professionally cleaned, prepared, and treated by Alison to highlight its features and preserve it for generations to come.
