8″ Barremites dificilils Fossil Ammonite – Lower Barremian, Cretaceous – Sisteron, France – Alice Purnell Collection

Original price was: £120.00.Current price is: £96.00.

This listing features a magnificent 8-inch Barremites dificilils fossil ammonite, originating from the Lower Barremian Stage of the Early Cretaceous Period, approximately 129 to 125 million years ago. This beautifully preserved specimen was found near Sisteron, France, a region famed for its marine Cretaceous fossil beds. It comes from the notable Alice Purnell Collection, ensuring documented provenance and top-tier fossil curation.

Barremites dificilils belongs to the family Desmoceratidae and is characterised by its moderately involute shell, gently curved ribs, and rounded venter. These traits indicate it was a free-swimming, nektonic marine cephalopod that thrived in the warm epicontinental seas of the Barremian.

This large specimen displays excellent preservation with defined ribbing and classic ammonite coiling, offering both scientific value and visual appeal. A premium piece for any serious collector or educational institution.

Geological Context: The Lower Barremian is part of the Lower Cretaceous, a time of significant marine transgressions and evolutionary diversification. The fossil-bearing beds around Sisteron, in southeastern France, are part of a sedimentary sequence of marls and limestones that offer a rich window into Cretaceous marine ecosystems. Ammonites from this formation serve as important biostratigraphic markers for correlating rock layers across Europe.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
