Geological Age – Cretaceous Oceans of Madagascar

This ammonite dates to the Cretaceous Period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago, a time when dinosaurs dominated the land and warm tropical seas covered much of Madagascar.

The Boeny region is internationally renowned for producing exceptionally preserved marine fossils, including ammonites, nautiloids, and other cephalopods. These fossils were buried in ancient seabed sediments, allowing mineral-rich conditions to preserve both external shells and internal chamber structures with outstanding clarity.

Fossil Type – Ammonite Cephalopod (Phylloceras)

Ammonites were extinct marine molluscs belonging to the class Cephalopoda, closely related to modern squid, octopus, and nautilus.

This specimen belongs to the genus Phylloceras, a classic and highly sought-after ammonite group known for its smooth shell form combined with extremely complex internal suture lines.

Scientific classification includes:

  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Subclass: Ammonoidea
  • Order: Phylloceratida
  • Family: Phylloceratidae
  • Genus: Phylloceras

Phylloceras ammonites are especially prized because their sutures form some of the most delicate and ornate natural patterns in the fossil record.

Stunning Polished Display with Sutures and Septa Exposed

What makes this ammonite truly special is the professional polishing, which reveals the spectacular internal architecture of the shell.

Visible features include:

  • Highly complex suture patterns, resembling natural fractal artwork
  • Septa (internal chamber walls) clearly exposed
  • Large, bold spiral form with excellent symmetry
  • Smooth outer shell contrasts beautifully with the inner detail
  • Impressive 8” size, ideal for statement display

These preserved chambers once helped the living ammonite control buoyancy, allowing it to move effortlessly through the prehistoric seas.

Depositional Environment – Tropical Cretaceous Seas

During the Cretaceous, Madagascar lay within warm, shallow marine environments teeming with life. Ammonites like Phylloceras were active predators, swimming above carbonate-rich sea floors alongside marine reptiles, fish, and reef organisms.

After death, their shells sank and became buried in soft sediment. Over millions of years, fossilisation preserved both the original shell form and internal mineral structures, creating the dramatic patterns seen today.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
