Geological Setting – Bucklandi Zone, Lower Lias, Lower Jurassic

This fossil originates from the Lower Lias Formation, specifically within the famous Bucklandi Zone, dating to approximately 195–200 million years ago during the earliest part of the Jurassic Period. At this time, Lyme Regis lay beneath a warm shallow sea, supporting abundant marine life including ammonites, belemnites, fish, marine reptiles, and rare nautiloids such as Cenoceras.

The sediments of the Lower Lias were deposited in calm offshore marine environments, where fine muds and limestones accumulated on the seabed. Rapid burial events and low oxygen conditions contributed to exceptional fossil preservation, allowing marine shells to survive in remarkable condition for nearly 200 million years.

Monmouth Beach is one of the most famous collecting sites along the UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast, internationally celebrated for producing fossils of outstanding scientific and historical value.

Fossil Species – Cenoceras cf. obesum Nautilus

Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid cephalopod belonging to the subclass Nautiloidea, relatives of the modern living nautilus. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids survived the end-Cretaceous extinction and continue today in deep marine environments, making these fossils especially fascinating evolutionary links.

The designation Cenoceras cf. obesum indicates close affinity to the species obesum, a robust Lower Jurassic form known for its thick coiled shell, smooth exterior, and strong internal chamber structure.

Nautiloids possessed a series of internal chambers separated by septa, used for buoyancy control, with the living animal occupying only the final chamber. Fossils such as this provide an extraordinary look into the biology and ecology of Jurassic cephalopods beyond the more commonly found ammonites.

Morphology, Preservation and Display Presence

This specimen’s substantial 9.5 inch diameter makes it a true statement fossil. Large Cenoceras specimens are increasingly difficult to obtain, especially with clear shell form and strong structural preservation.

Notable display features include:

  • Impressive large size for the species
  • Classic nautiloid coiling and robust shell geometry
  • Historical Lower Jurassic provenance from Lyme Regis
  • Outstanding collector and museum-quality presentation

This fossil is ideal as a centrepiece for any serious collection, educational setting, or high-end natural history décor.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
