9″ austinoceras fossil ammonite – large cretaceous marine fossil – morocco – genuine certified specimen – actual fossil shown

£48.00

This listing features a remarkable and genuine 9″ Austinoceras ammonite fossil from the Cretaceous Period, discovered in Morocco, North Africa. Austinoceras is a genus of extinct ammonoid cephalopods known for their intricately ribbed, coiled shells and is part of the rich fossil record preserved in the ancient marine deposits of the Cretaceous seas.

Ammonites like Austinoceras lived approximately 100 to 66 million years ago, during a time when much of modern-day Morocco was submerged beneath warm, shallow seas. As fast-swimming predators, ammonites played a vital role in marine ecosystems and are closely related to modern-day squid and cuttlefish. Their distinctive spiral shells, divided into gas-filled chambers, helped them regulate buoyancy and maneuver through the ocean.

This large and impressive specimen displays well-preserved features, including the distinctive spiral curvature and visible suture lines. Its size and aesthetic quality make it not only scientifically significant but also ideal for collectors or display purposes.

The image includes a 1cm scale cube for full size reference. The fossil shown is the exact specimen you will receive, and it comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
