Description
ACRIOCERAS TABARELLI Fossil Heteromorph Ammonite – Barremian, Cretaceous – Barrême, South France
About the Fossil:
This well-preserved Acrioceras tabarelli heteromorph ammonite fossil originates from the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous period (~129-125 million years ago) and was discovered in Barrême, South France. Acrioceras is a genus of heteromorph ammonites, meaning they had unconventional, uncoiled shell morphologies, unlike the typical spiral ammonites. These ammonites are known for their irregularly coiled, loosely spiraled shells, which make them an exceptional addition to any fossil collection.
During the Early Cretaceous, ammonites like Acrioceras tabarelli inhabited warm, shallow seas, where they played an essential role in marine ecosystems. Their unique shell structures suggest they may have had different swimming behaviors and buoyancy adaptations compared to regularly coiled ammonites. The Barremian-age deposits of Barrême, France, are world-famous for their rich marine fossil content, particularly their diverse ammonite faunas.
