Aegasteroceras saggitarium Ammonite Fossil | Lower Jurassic, Frodingham Ironstone | Conesby Quarry, Scunthorpe | Alice Purnell Collection

Original price was: £120.00.Current price is: £108.00.

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Aegasteroceras saggitarium, a beautifully preserved cephalopod from the Lower Jurassic (Lower Lias). This exceptional piece was collected from the famous Conesby Quarry near Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, England, and forms part of the distinguished Alice Purnell Collection, a trusted source of rare and scientifically important British fossils.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Aegasteroceras saggitarium belongs to a group of early ammonites known for their sharply ribbed, evolute shells and early Jurassic origin. This species is especially significant in biostratigraphy, being a reliable zonal fossil for the Denotatus Subzone of the Obtusum Zone in the Lower Lias Group.

The fossil comes from the Frodingham Ironstone Formation, a highly fossiliferous unit deposited in shallow marine conditions around 200–190 million years ago, during the Hettangian to Sinemurian stages of the Lower Jurassic. This formation is part of the broader Lias Group, which represents some of the earliest Jurassic marine environments in the UK.

Conesby Quarry, now an iconic locality, is known for producing beautifully preserved ammonites, bivalves, and other marine fossils in iron-rich sediment, often with excellent detail and natural mineralisation. Fossils from this site are prized for their scientific value and visual appeal.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
