Amaltheus was an extinct marine cephalopod with a coiled, chambered shell. During growth, the animal formed progressively larger chambers around the outer whorl. Ammonites were relatives of living squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, although they belonged to their own extinct and remarkably diverse branch.
