Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern-day nautilus, and although they resembled a nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living Coleoids, i.e. octopus, squid, and cuttlefish!

These stunningly beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazingly colourful inner chambers of the fossil.

Description

Add a breathtaking piece of Earth’s ancient history to your collection with this genuine pair of polished ammonite fossils from Madagascar. These fossils are cut and polished to reveal the spectacular internal chambers and mineral patterns inside each shell, offering a striking glimpse into life during the Cretaceous Period.

Ammonites were marine molluscs that thrived between 240 to 65 million years ago, existing alongside the dinosaurs. Although their spiral shells may resemble those of snails, ammonites are actually more closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. Their chambered shells helped them regulate buoyancy as they moved through the oceans.

This matched ammonite pair has been expertly sliced and polished, showcasing the mirror-like cross-sections of both halves. The result is an extraordinary and symmetrical display piece that makes a perfect gift for fossil lovers, science enthusiasts, and collectors of natural wonders.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
