Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is mainly due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a modern day snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish.

These stunningly beautiful ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazing colourful chambers inside the fossil.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

Step into the prehistoric seas of the Cretaceous period with this beautifully preserved and polished Ammonite Fossil, sourced directly from the fossil-rich deposits of Madagascar. These ancient marine creatures lived over 65 to 100 million years ago, leaving behind their iconic coiled shells which have fascinated collectors and scientists alike.

This particular ammonite has been sliced in half and expertly polished to reveal the internal chambered structure that once housed the soft body of the living animal. These chambers often become mineralised over millions of years, producing vibrant natural colours and patterns that are unique to each specimen.

What Are Ammonites?

Ammonites were extinct marine molluscs belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea, part of the larger cephalopod group that also includes modern squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish. Despite their visual resemblance to snails, they are not closely related. Ammonites had coiled external shells divided into chambers. As they grew, the ammonite would move into a new chamber, sealing off the old one.

Ammonites were free-swimming predators, navigating ancient oceans using jet propulsion, much like their modern relatives. Their fossil record spans from the Devonian through to the end of the Cretaceous, when they became extinct during the same mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
