Description
A fine specimen of an Androgynoceras ammonite fossil from the world-renowned Green Ammonite Beds of the Lower Lias Formation, part of the Jurassic Coast at Golden Cap, Seatown, Dorset, UK. This ammonite was discovered by our own field team, Alister and Alison, on 03 May 2025, and has been carefully cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to preserve both its scientific value and aesthetic appeal.

Geological and Depositional Context:
The Green Ammonite Beds form part of the Lower Lias Formation, deposited in a shallow marine shelf environment during the Early Jurassic. These laminated shale and limestone layers are especially fossiliferous due to periodic anoxic (oxygen-poor) conditions that allowed for the exceptional preservation of marine fauna, especially ammonites.
Golden Cap, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast, is one of the richest fossil localities in the UK. The site is globally significant for its continuous sequence of Jurassic marine strata.
Morphological Features:
- Typically compressed, involute shells
- Well-developed, sharp ribbing across the flanks
- A distinct keel often present on the venter
- May show iridescence or greenish hue in certain preservations, typical of the “Green Ammonite Beds”
- Often preserved in calcareous nodules or ironstone concretions
Notable Information:
- Found in a stratigraphically important biozone (part of the Oxynotum Subzone, Upper Sinemurian)
- This genus is a key marker in Jurassic ammonite biostratigraphy
- Excellent collector’s specimen from a protected and scientifically important site
- Beautiful natural preservation with clear structural features, ideal for display or study
