Classic Jurassic Coast Locality
This Angeloteuthis michael fossil comes from the Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias sequence exposed along the world-renowned Jurassic Coast at Charmouth and Lyme Regis in Dorset. This coastline is one of the most important fossil collecting areas in Britain and is especially famous for its Early Jurassic marine fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, fossil fish, crinoids, bivalves, and other ancient sea life.
The Black Ven Marls are associated with the Charmouth Mudstone Formation and were deposited in a marine setting during the Early Jurassic. Fine muds settled across the sea floor, creating conditions that allowed many shells, guards, bones, and other remains to be preserved. Belemnites are among the most recognisable fossils from these deposits, and specimens from Charmouth and Lyme Regis remain highly collectable because of their strong geological and historical connection to the Jurassic Coast.
About Angeloteuthis michael
Angeloteuthis michael was formally described by W. D. Lang in 1928 in his work on the Belemnite Marls of Charmouth. It belongs to the extinct belemnite order Belemnitida and the family Passaloteuthidae. Belemnites were marine cephalopods related to modern squid and cuttlefish, with soft bodies, arms, internal chambered structures, and a solid bullet-shaped internal guard that is most commonly preserved as a fossil.
During life, the guard formed part of the animal’s internal skeleton and helped with balance and stability in the water. The living animal would have been an active swimmer in the Jurassic sea, feeding on smaller marine animals and forming part of a rich food chain that also included ammonites, fish, and large marine reptiles.
Form, Preservation and Fossil Features
Belemnite fossils are valued for their distinctive shape and strong connection to ancient marine environments. Angeloteuthis michael specimens are part of the diverse Early Jurassic belemnite fauna of Dorset, where related genera and species are known from the Belemnite Marls and surrounding Lower Lias beds. The fossil may show the natural tapered form typical of belemnite guards, with surface detail, mineralisation, and natural wear reflecting its long geological history.
As a fossil from the Black Ven Marls, this specimen may display the characteristic preservation associated with the fine marine mudstones of the area. These fossils are millions of years old and each piece is naturally individual, with its own shape, colour, texture, and preservation style. This makes the specimen suitable for fossil collectors, geology enthusiasts, educational displays, natural history cabinets, and anyone interested in genuine British Jurassic fossils.
Discovery, Preparation and Authenticity
Your specimen was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on the Jurassic Coast. It has been cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to help preserve and present the fossil while retaining its natural character.
This is a carefully chosen fossil, selected for its authenticity, locality, and natural display appeal. The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive, not a stock image. A Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card is included, making this Angeloteuthis michael belemnite a trustworthy and attractive addition to any fossil, belemnite, cephalopod, British fossil, or Jurassic Coast collection.
