This listing is for a genuine Arnioceras fossil ammonite multi block from the Blue Lias of Quantoxhead, Somerset, UK. This carefully chosen fossil contains multiple ammonite specimens preserved together in natural matrix, creating an attractive and highly collectable display piece from one of Britain’s classic Jurassic fossil localities. Arnioceras is a well-known Lower Jurassic ammonite genus, admired by collectors for its clean coiled form, strong ribbing, and close association with the early marine ecosystems of the Jurassic seas.

The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive. Full sizing and scale details can be seen in the photo, allowing you to view the block’s natural shape, ammonite placement, preservation, and overall display appeal before purchase.

Blue Lias Fossil Locality, Quantoxhead

This Arnioceras ammonite multi block comes from the Blue Lias of Quantoxhead, Somerset, UK. The Blue Lias is one of the most famous fossil-bearing formations in Britain, known for its rhythmically bedded limestones and shales that preserve an exceptional record of Early Jurassic marine life. Quantoxhead and the surrounding Somerset coast have produced many classic fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, crinoids, fossil fish, and occasional marine reptile remains.

The Blue Lias was deposited in a shallow marine environment during the Early Jurassic, when much of southern Britain lay beneath warm seas. Alternating layers of limestone and shale formed as fine sediment settled across the sea floor, preserving shells and other remains over millions of years. Ammonites are among the most recognisable fossils from these beds, and multi blocks are especially appealing because they preserve more than one fossil in a single natural piece.

About Arnioceras

Arnioceras was an extinct ammonite genus from the Lower Jurassic and is particularly associated with the Sinemurian stage. Ammonites were marine cephalopods related to modern squid, octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus. They lived inside coiled chambered shells, using the internal chambers to help regulate buoyancy while the living animal occupied the outer body chamber.

Arnioceras is known for its evolute shell shape, where the whorls are openly coiled and earlier growth stages remain visible. The shell commonly displays strong, regular ribs that run across the whorl sides, giving the fossil a bold and attractive texture. These ribs helped strengthen the shell during life and are now one of the key features that make Arnioceras specimens popular with fossil collectors. The genus belongs to the order Ammonitida and is part of the family Arietitidae, a group of Lower Jurassic ammonites that are important for understanding early Jurassic marine faunas and biostratigraphy.

Ancient Jurassic Marine Environment

During the time this ammonite lived, the seas covering Somerset supported a rich marine ecosystem. Arnioceras would have shared the water with other ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, crinoids, fish, and marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Ammonites were active marine animals and formed an important part of the Jurassic food chain, both as predators of smaller organisms and as prey for larger marine animals.

The Blue Lias sea floor provided excellent conditions for fossil preservation. Shells could be buried by fine sediment before being broken down, allowing their shape and ornamentation to survive. A multi block such as this offers a natural snapshot of the ancient sea bed, with multiple ammonites preserved together as part of the same geological setting.

Fossil Features and Collector Appeal

This Arnioceras ammonite multi block is a genuine British Jurassic fossil with strong visual and scientific interest. The combination of multiple ammonites, natural Blue Lias matrix, and classic Quantoxhead locality makes it ideal for fossil collectors, ammonite enthusiasts, educational collections, geology displays, natural history cabinets, and unique fossil gifts.

As a natural fossil, the piece may show matrix, mineralisation, surface texture, natural wear, and individual preservation features. These characteristics are part of its authenticity and help reflect its long geological history. Each ammonite block is unique, and the specimen shown in the photo is the exact piece you will receive.
