These Somerset ammonites are predominantly Hildoceras sp., but  may include some other ammonite species that inhabited the Somerset region during the Jurassic period.

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around the world due to their familiar spiral shape. They were marine based, present between 240 – 65 million years ago. They are the most   popular fossil for collections and found all over the world. Some ammonites could reach up to 2 metres in size. Children love collecting them, and places like Lyme Regis in Dorset becomes busy during the summer months with many people trying their luck at finding impressions in the rocks of their own ammonites.

Description

Step into the ancient world of North America’s Oligocene epoch with this exceptional fossilized jaw from the extinct mammal Merycoidodontoidea, commonly referred to as an Oreodont or ruminating hog. This unique specimen offers a rare glimpse into a bygone era when these curious, short-faced herbivores roamed the plains of what is now the western United States.

Merycoidodontoidea were hoofed, cud-chewing mammals with a pig-like appearance. Despite their resemblance to modern pigs, they are more closely related to camels and other artiodactyls. These fascinating creatures had fang-like canine teeth, heavy jawlines, and a sturdy build. They were well adapted to grazing and browsing on ancient vegetation.

This specimen features a beautifully preserved lower jaw section, showcasing fossilised teeth that highlight the animal’s herbivorous diet. Such finds are highly prized among collectors and paleontology enthusiasts for their rarity and excellent educational value.

This jaw fossil comes from the Oligocene epoch (approximately 34 to 23 million years ago), a period marked by global climate shifts and mammalian diversification. The fossil was unearthed in the USA, likely from the White River Formation or other Oligocene fossil-rich deposits.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
