Cylindroteuthis Belemnite Fossil – Jurassic Cephalopod from Northampton UK – Genuine Squid Ancestor with Certificate

Original price was: £27.00.Current price is: £21.60.

Belemnites were marine animals belonging to the phylum Mollusca and the class Cephalopoda. Their closest living relatives are Squid and Cuttlefish.

They had a squid-like body but, unlike modern squid, they had a hard-internal skeleton.

In the animal’s tail, the skeleton formed a bullet-shaped feature sometimes referred to as a guard, but more correctly termed a rostrum. These are the parts that are normally found as fossils.

Belemnites lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous period, which lasted about 135 million years.

Description

This listing features a beautifully preserved Cylindroteuthis sp. Belemnite Fossil from the Jurassic Period, found in Northampton, UK — a region well-known for its rich fossil deposits from the Mesozoic Era.

Belemnites were an extinct group of marine cephalopods closely related to modern-day squid and cuttlefish. They lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, approximately 201 to 66 million years ago. Unlike today’s soft-bodied squid, belemnites had a hard internal skeleton, the most commonly fossilised part being the rostrum — a bullet-shaped internal structure that provided stability while swimming.

The genus Cylindroteuthis is recognised by its elongated, cylindrical rostrum, and specimens from the UK Jurassic formations are particularly well-preserved. These ancient cephalopods had ten short arms equipped with small hooks, allowing them to grasp prey like small fish and crustaceans with precision.

Belemnite fossils are widely collected and studied due to their unique shape and historical significance. Their fossils provide insight into the evolution of marine molluscs and the ecosystems of the prehistoric seas.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
