This genuine ammonite fossil is identified as Berbericeras sekikense and comes from Sengenthal in Bavaria, Germany. It dates to the Lower Bathonian stage of the Middle Jurassic. Lower Bathonian Middle Jurassic Age

The Bathonian is a stage of the Middle Jurassic Period, dating to approximately 168 to 166 million years ago. This specimen comes from the earlier part of that interval. During the Bathonian, shallow to moderately deep seas covered parts of central Europe and supported ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, echinoids, and other marine organisms.

After death, an ammonite shell could settle onto the seabed and become buried by carbonate-rich mud, marl, or other marine sediment. Compaction, mineral replacement, and lithification preserved the shell or its internal mould. Later uplift, erosion, and quarrying exposed the fossil-bearing Jurassic rocks of Bavaria.

Berbericeras sekikense

Berbericeras was an extinct marine cephalopod with a planispirally coiled shell divided internally into chambers. The living animal occupied the final body chamber, while earlier sealed chambers helped regulate buoyancy. Ammonites were relatives of modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, although they formed their own diverse and now extinct group.

Fossil specialists distinguish ammonites by comparing shell shape, whorl breadth, umbilical width, ribbing, tubercles, constrictions, and the form of the outer edge. Berbericeras specimens can show evolute coiling with a clearly visible umbilicus and strong ribs crossing the flanks.
