Geological & Palaeontological Context:

  • Genus: BRASILIA
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Lower Aalenian (~174.1 to 170.3 million years ago)
  • Formation: Lower part of the Inferior Oolite Group (specific local context not always formally defined in Beaminster area exposures)
  • Location: Beaminster, Dorset, UK
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine shelf setting within the epicontinental seas of the Jurassic period. Sediments are typically oolitic limestones, bioclastic wackestones, and marls, indicating oxygenated bottom waters and rich faunal assemblages.

Taxonomic Classification:

  • Family: Hammatoceratidae
  • Superfamily: Hammatoceratoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Suborder: Ammonitina
  • Genus: BRASILIA
  • Zone (if determinable): Potentially the Opalinum Zone, although site-specific stratigraphy in Beaminster can make precise zonation uncertain.

Morphological Features:

The genus BRASILIA is characterised by small to medium-sized planispiral, evolute ammonites with strong ribbing, typically with bifurcating or trifurcating ribs that arise from pronounced umbilical tubercles. The whorl section is typically compressed, and the venter may show a weak keel or rounded profile. This specimen showcases several ammonite individuals within the matrix, offering an exceptional multi-fossil display.

The preservation is excellent, revealing shell structure and suture patterns that make this a visually appealing and scientifically informative fossil.

Notable Attributes:

  • Multi-ammonite fossil plate/block
  • Sourced from a classic locality in Dorset
  • Associated with Aalenian ammonite faunas often used in early Middle Jurassic biostratigraphy
  • From the Alice Purnell Collection, a recognised source of carefully selected and curated British fossils

Additional Information:

  • All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm – please see photo for accurate sizing.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
