Description
This listing is for an authentic fossil shark tooth from the extinct species Plicatolamna sulcata, collected from the Santonian-aged Chalk of the Southerham Lime Kiln Quarry, near Lewes, East Sussex, UK. This geologic formation dates to the Upper Cretaceous period, approximately 86–83 million years ago, when a shallow epicontinental sea covered much of Europe.
Plicatolamna sulcata was an extinct lamniform shark that inhabited these warm tropical seas. It is known for its relatively slender, smooth-edged triangular teeth, which differ subtly from the more robust P. crassidens. These sharks were likely fast-moving predators or scavengers, playing a vital role in the Late Cretaceous marine ecosystem.
The British Chalk is internationally famous for its fossil preservation, especially of marine invertebrates and vertebrates. The Southerham Quarry is one of the most important fossil localities in the UK, having produced an abundance of shark teeth and other marine remains from the Santonian stage.
This particular specimen has been carefully prepared and is a fine example of this rare species. It’s an excellent addition for collectors, educators, or enthusiasts interested in the diversity of Cretaceous marine life.
