Discovery, Preparation & Provenance

This fossil mix was personally discovered by our own field team members, Alister and Alison, on 01 December 2025 during responsible collecting in well-known Jurassic exposures of southern England. Every fossil in this collection has been cleaned, prepared, and treated by Alison, ensuring stability and clear visibility of natural features while retaining the authentic, untouched character that collectors value.

Direct provenance from discovery through preparation ensures confidence in both authenticity and ethical sourcing.

Geological Age & Depositional Setting

  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Location: Dorset and Somerset, United Kingdom

The fossils originate from marine sedimentary rocks deposited when much of the UK lay beneath warm, shallow seas. These environments supported abundant life, including ammonites, bivalves, gastropods, echinoderms, and other marine organisms. Fine sediments allowed shells and skeletal material to be rapidly buried, aiding fossil preservation and producing the diverse assemblages seen in this mix.

Fossil Types & Species Representation

This mixed fossil lot includes a varied selection of 32 individual fossils, which may feature combinations of:

  • Ammonite fragments and partial whorls
  • Bivalves and oysters
  • Gastropods
  • Belemnite fragments
  • Crinoid stems
  • Other marine invertebrate remains typical of British Jurassic deposits

Each fossil displays its own natural morphology, textures, and preservation style, offering insight into the diversity of Jurassic marine ecosystems. The variation makes this collection ideal for hands-on learning, comparative study, or building a broad fossil reference set.

Morphology & Educational Value

The fossils in this mix showcase a wide range of shell forms, growth patterns, and preservation modes, from smooth and ribbed ammonite fragments to layered bivalve shells and cylindrical crinoid stems. Together, they provide an excellent introduction to fossil identification, morphology, and the processes of fossilisation, including mineral replacement and sediment infill.

Because this is a mixed assemblage, it is especially useful for schools, home education, and beginner collectors looking to explore multiple fossil types in one authentic set.

Display, Collecting & Gifting

With a total weight of approximately 1kg, this fossil mix offers substantial value and presence. Full sizing and individual fossil details can be seen in the photographs provided. Whether displayed in trays, used for study, or shared as a hands-on learning resource, this collection delivers both scientific interest and natural beauty.

Ideal For

  • Fossil and natural history collectors
  • Educational use and teaching collections
  • Schools, home education, and STEM learning
  • Gifts for geology and palaeontology enthusiasts
  • Beginners building a British fossil collection

This British Jurassic Fossil Mix from Dorset and Somerset is a genuine snapshot of ancient marine life, responsibly collected, professionally prepared, and ready to be explored and enjoyed.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
