Description
Genuine British Jurassic Fossil Collection
This listing offers a 1kg British Fossil Mix containing 40 individual fossil specimens, all collected from classic Jurassic localities in Dorset and Somerset, United Kingdom. These areas are world-famous for their rich fossil heritage and continuous Jurassic exposures, producing a wide diversity of marine fossils that record life in ancient seas around 190–170 million years ago.
The fossil lot shown in the photographs is the exact collection you will receive. Each piece has been carefully selected for authenticity, preservation, and variety. All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and are supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity. Full sizing and visual detail for the complete mix can be seen clearly in the images.
Discovery, Preparation, and Provenance
This fossil mix was personally discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 01 December 2025 during responsible field collecting at established British Jurassic sites. Following collection, every specimen was cleaned, prepped, and stabilised by Alison, ensuring the fossils are safe to handle, display, and study.
Knowing exactly who collected and prepared a fossil adds an important layer of provenance and trust, making this collection particularly appealing to collectors who value transparency and ethical sourcing.
Fossil Types and Species Representation
This mixed fossil lot represents a natural cross-section of Jurassic marine life. While each mix is unique, collections of this type typically include a variety of well-known British Jurassic fossils such as:
- Ammonites – extinct marine cephalopods with coiled shells, often ribbed or ornamented, belonging to the order Ammonitida. These are among the most iconic Jurassic fossils and are key index fossils used in dating rock layers.
- Belemnites – bullet-shaped internal shells of squid-like cephalopods, order Belemnitida, common in Jurassic seas.
- Bivalves – fossil clams and oysters, including robust shell fragments that reflect life on or within the sea floor.
- Gastropods – marine snails preserving spiral shell forms.
- Crinoid fragments – columnal stems from sea lilies, echinoderms that lived attached to the seabed.
Together, these fossils represent multiple ecological niches within Jurassic marine environments, from open-water swimmers to bottom-dwelling filter feeders.
Geological and Environmental Context
During the Jurassic Period, Dorset and Somerset were submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea rich in life. Fine muds, limestones, and marls accumulated on the seabed, periodically burying shells and skeletal material. Rapid burial and low-oxygen conditions in some settings allowed fossils to survive long enough to mineralise, preserving their forms in remarkable detail.
These fossils originate from sedimentary rocks laid down during the Early to Middle Jurassic, a time of major marine diversification. Many of the fossil groups represented are used by geologists to identify specific horizons and reconstruct ancient environments.
Collecting, Educational, and Display Value
This 1kg fossil mix with 40 individual specimens is ideal for collectors, educators, home-schooling resources, gifts, or hands-on learning. The variety allows close inspection of different fossil groups, shell structures, and preservation styles, making it far more engaging than a single specimen alone.
You will receive the exact fossil mix shown, responsibly collected, professionally prepared, and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity, confirming its genuine British Jurassic origin and ensuring complete confidence in your purchase.
