Genuine Brodieia curva Ammonite Fossil from Morocco

This genuine Brodieia curva ammonite fossil originates from Morocco and dates to the Upper Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic Period. It represents an extinct marine cephalopod that lived in the ancient seas covering parts of North Africa approximately 174 to 178 million years ago.

Upper Toarcian Lower Jurassic Fossil

The Toarcian is the final geological stage of the Lower Jurassic Epoch. It followed the Pliensbachian and was succeeded by the Aalenian, which marks the beginning of the Middle Jurassic. The Upper Toarcian represents the later part of this stage, when ammonite faunas continued to evolve and diversify across the marine environments of Europe, North Africa and the western Tethyan region.

Ammonites are particularly important to palaeontology because many species evolved rapidly and existed for comparatively limited intervals of geological time. Their widespread distribution through ancient seas makes them highly useful as index fossils. By identifying particular ammonite species and assemblages, palaeontologists can compare the relative ages of marine rock layers found in widely separated locations.

Brodieia curva Shell Characteristics

Brodieia curva possessed a planispirally coiled shell divided internally into a succession of chambers. The living ammonite occupied the final and largest section, known as the body chamber, while the older sealed chambers formed the phragmocone. A narrow tube called the siphuncle passed through these chambers and helped the animal control its buoyancy within the water.

The coiled shell developed around a central depression called the umbilicus. Depending on growth stage and preservation, the earlier whorls may remain visible within this central area. The shell flanks can display curved or flexuous ribbing, creating the distinctive ornamented appearance associated with many Jurassic ammonites.

Ribs were not merely decorative features. They strengthened the shell and are among the important characteristics used by specialists when comparing ammonite genera and species. Changes in rib spacing, curvature and strength may also occur as an ammonite grows, meaning juvenile and mature sections of the same shell can display different patterns.

Natural variations in surface texture, incomplete shell areas, mineral deposits, fine fractures, matrix attachment and weathering are expected in genuine fossils. These features reflect burial, mineralisation and geological exposure over millions of years and contribute to the individuality of the specimen.

Ammonites were marine molluscs related to living cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish, octopuses and nautiluses. They flourished throughout much of the Mesozoic Era and developed an extraordinary variety of shell shapes and ornamentation before becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period.

Jurassic Marine Environment of Morocco

During the Upper Toarcian, Morocco formed part of the southern margin of the western Tethyan marine region. Large areas of North Africa were influenced by shallow to moderately deep seas in which mud, carbonate sediment and the remains of marine organisms accumulated across the seabed.

The living ammonite would have moved through the water using jet propulsion, while its chambered shell helped regulate buoyancy. After death, the shell settled onto the sea floor and was gradually covered by sediment. Burial protected at least part of the shell from currents, scavengers and physical destruction.

As further layers accumulated, pressure compacted the sediment into rock. Mineral-rich groundwater later moved through the deposit, filling spaces and preserving or replacing portions of the original shell. The fossil visible today is the result of this lengthy geological process.

Morocco is internationally recognised for its varied fossil-bearing rocks and extensive geological record. Although the country is especially famous for fossils from the Palaeozoic and Cretaceous, its Jurassic deposits also preserve scientifically valuable ammonites and other marine organisms from the ancient Tethyan realm.
