Genuine Middle Jurassic Button Coral Fossil
This carefully chosen specimen is a genuine scleractinian coral fossil, commonly described as a button coral, from the Clypeus Grit of the Inferior Oolite Group. It was collected from Churchill, Oxfordshire, UK, and dates to the Bajocian–Bathonian interval of the Middle Jurassic.
This authentic British fossil represents a solitary marine coral that lived in the warm, shallow seas covering southern England during the Jurassic Period. It belongs to the order Scleractinia, the major group of stony corals characterised by hard calcium carbonate skeletons divided internally by radiating partitions.
The informal name “button coral” refers to the compact, rounded, disc-like or low conical form commonly displayed by these solitary corals. Unlike colonial corals, which consist of many connected individuals, this type of fossil represents the skeletal structure produced by a single coral polyp.
Scleractinian Coral Morphology
The hard skeleton of a solitary coral is known as the corallum. Its upper surface contains the calice, a cup-shaped depression that housed the soft-bodied polyp during life. Thin skeletal partitions called septa extend inward from the outer wall, often creating an attractive radiating or star-like pattern across the exposed surface.
Depending on the orientation and preservation of the specimen, visible features may include the rounded outer margin, central calice, radiating septa, concentric growth markings or the basal surface. The lower surface may also show the area where the coral rested upon or attached to a firm object on the Jurassic seabed.
During life, the polyp extended tentacles from the calice to capture plankton and suspended organic particles from the surrounding seawater. As the animal grew, it deposited additional calcium carbonate beneath and around itself, gradually enlarging the corallum.
The compact button-like form would have helped the coral remain relatively stable on a seabed affected by currents, waves and shifting carbonate sediment. Its exact shape was influenced by growth stage, water movement, substrate conditions and the amount of sediment accumulating around it.
Natural wear, attached limestone, incomplete margins, mineral-filled fractures and variations in colour or surface texture are normal characteristics of an authentic fossil. These features record the specimen’s original growth, time on the seabed, burial, fossilisation and later geological exposure.
Clypeus Grit and Inferior Oolite Geology
The Clypeus Grit is a fossiliferous limestone unit associated with the upper part of the Inferior Oolite succession. It takes its name from the characteristic echinoid Clypeus, whose remains are frequently associated with these rocks.
The Inferior Oolite Group comprises a varied sequence of limestones, marls and locally sandy or iron-rich beds deposited during the Middle Jurassic. Despite the word “inferior,” the name does not refer to quality. It distinguishes these rocks from the younger Great Oolite Group lying above them in the regional geological succession.
Many Inferior Oolite limestones contain abundant ooids, shell fragments and carbonate mud. Ooids are small, rounded grains formed when calcium carbonate accumulated in layers around tiny nuclei while they were repeatedly moved by waves and currents. Their presence indicates deposition in warm, shallow, well-agitated marine water.
The Clypeus Grit represents a carbonate seabed that supported a diverse benthic community. Corals, echinoids, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, crinoids and other marine invertebrates lived on or within the sediment. Ammonites and other swimming animals inhabited the water above, forming part of a complex Jurassic ecosystem.
Bajocian–Bathonian Marine Environment
The Bajocian and Bathonian are successive stages of the Middle Jurassic Period. During this interval, the region now forming Oxfordshire lay beneath shallow tropical to subtropical seas at a latitude considerably farther south than its present position.
Water depths and sediment conditions changed repeatedly as sea level fluctuated and carbonate banks developed across the region. At times, strong currents produced clean, mobile sediments containing ooids and broken shells. During quieter intervals, finer carbonate mud and skeletal debris settled across the seabed.
Solitary corals occupied suitable areas where the substrate was sufficiently stable and the water remained well oxygenated. Their rigid skeletons could survive after the soft tissues decayed, although specimens were sometimes overturned, worn or partly broken before final burial.
Sediment eventually covered this coral and protected it from further disturbance. Over millions of years, compaction and mineral cement transformed the surrounding carbonate sediment into limestone. Groundwater moving through the rock contributed to mineral replacement and the preservation of the coral’s original skeletal form.
Churchill, Oxfordshire Provenance
Churchill lies within the classic Jurassic limestone country of Oxfordshire and the eastern Cotswolds. The surrounding landscape contains Middle Jurassic rocks that preserve evidence of the warm marine environments once present across this part of Britain.
