Description

Genuine Calliphylloceras Ammonite Fossil

This genuine ammonite fossil is identified as Calliphylloceras nilssoni and comes from Aveyron in Occitanie, France. It dates to the Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic and is a carefully selected European specimen with valuable species, geological age, and regional provenance. The photographs show the actual fossil offered for sale, so the ammonite pictured is the exact specimen you will receive.

Calliphylloceras was an extinct marine cephalopod with a coiled, chambered shell. During growth, the animal added progressively larger chambers around the outer whorl. The living ammonite occupied the final body chamber, while older sealed chambers contributed to buoyancy control. Ammonites were relatives of living squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, although they formed their own extinct and highly diverse group.

Toarcian Lower Jurassic Age

The Toarcian is the final stage of the Early Jurassic Period, approximately 184 to 174 million years ago. During this interval, marine environments extended across large areas of Europe and supported varied ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, belemnites, fish, and other sea life. After death, an ammonite shell could settle on the sea floor and become buried within sediment. Compaction, mineral replacement, and geological change then preserved parts of the shell as a fossil.

The Toarcian includes significant environmental changes in ancient oceans, and its rock record is important for understanding Jurassic climate, marine chemistry, and biological turnover. Ammonites evolved rapidly through this interval, making their changing shell forms valuable for comparing sedimentary sequences and establishing relative ages. The documented Toarcian age gives this specimen a clear place near the end of the Lower Jurassic succession.

Aveyron, Occitanie Provenance

Aveyron lies within the Occitanie region of southern France, an area with extensive sedimentary rocks that preserve important Jurassic marine fossils. These deposits record ancient seas that covered portions of what is now France. A specimen with documented regional provenance carries more collecting and educational context than an entirely unlocalised fossil.

Marine sediment helped protect portions of the shell and surrounding matrix. Natural colour, mineral texture, small breaks, areas of wear, and differences in surface preservation reflect the specimen’s long geological history. These characteristics are authentic features of an ancient fossil rather than signs of modern manufacture.

Phylloceratid Shell Form

Calliphylloceras belongs to the phylloceratid ammonites, a group generally recognised for smooth or finely ornamented, involute shells and complex leaf-like suture patterns. The suture lines mark where internal chamber walls joined the outer shell, and their intricate form is one of the group’s most distinctive features.

Examine the photographs for visible whorls, shell outline, umbilical region, surface texture, matrix, and preserved details on this individual example. Whorl proportions, degree of involution, ornament, and sutural features are among the characteristics used when comparing phylloceratid ammonites and interpreting their growth.

Every fossil preserves a different balance of original shell, mineral replacement, and surrounding rock. The multiple photographs show the exact specimen from useful angles and present its condition, proportions, texture, and natural display character more accurately than a generic image could.

Exact Specimen and Full Sizing

Full sizing is shown in the photographs, which provide the best scale information for this individual fossil. The images are not stock photographs and do not represent a similar piece. They show the exact Calliphylloceras nilssoni ammonite fossil that will be supplied.

Authenticity and Presentation

This is a genuine fossil specimen and includes a generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee. It has been carefully chosen for its characteristic phylloceratid form, Toarcian age, Aveyron locality, French provenance, and natural geological character. It makes a distinctive addition to a cabinet collection, educational display, office, study, or gift for anyone interested in authentic Lower Jurassic fossils, French palaeontology, or ammonite evolution.
