Calycoceras Fossil Ammonite – Cenomanian, Cretaceous – Glynde, UK – Certified Authentic Specimen – From Alice Purnell Collection

£24.00

This listing features a certified Calycoceras fossil ammonite, collected from the Cenomanian stage of the Cretaceous Period (~100 to 94 million years ago). The specimen originates from Glynde, East Sussex, United Kingdom, a well-known site for fossil-rich chalk deposits.

Calycoceras is a genus of extinct ammonite cephalopods in the family Acanthoceratidae. These animals were free-swimming predators in the warm shallow seas that covered much of what is now Europe during the mid-Cretaceous. Calycoceras ammonites are characterised by their strong ribbing, suture patterns, and occasionally tuberculate ornamentation, making them visually striking and scientifically important.

This fossil has been carefully preserved and was originally part of the Alice Purnell Collection, known for its quality and provenance. The image shows the actual fossil you will receive, with a 1cm scale cube included for reference. Your purchase comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
