Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) Fossil Ammonite – Lower Cenomanian, Cretaceous – Shapwick Grange, UK – Alice Purnell Collection

£30.00

Available here is a genuine and well-preserved Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) fossil ammonite from the Lower Cenomanian Stage of the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100 to 96 million years ago. This specimen was discovered at Shapwick Grange, United Kingdom, a locality known for marine chalk and marl deposits. It originates from the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, which features expertly curated and historically important fossil specimens.

Calycoceras, part of the family Acanthoceratidae, is an extinct genus of ammonite cephalopods. The Newboldiceras subgenus is noted for its distinctively ornamented shell with ribbing and tubercles. These features served not only as a protective adaptation but also assist paleontologists in biostratigraphic zonation of Cretaceous sediments.

This fossil specimen displays classic coiling, shell sculpture, and excellent detail. It is a highly desirable piece for collectors, researchers, or educational display.

Geological Context: The Lower Cenomanian marks the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, during which global sea levels were high and warm seas covered much of Europe. In the Shapwick Grange area, fossiliferous marine sediments preserve abundant invertebrate fauna, particularly ammonites and bivalves. These deposits represent a shallow, warm seaway that once covered southern Britain.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
