Carcharodon Fossil Shark Tooth | Eocene Ramsholt Suffolk UK | Authentic Fossil w/ COA

£42.00

Fossil Type & Species: Carcharodon (extinct mackerel shark lineage)

Geological Context: Eocene Epoch (approx. 56 – 34 million years ago)

Locality: Ramsholt, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Detailed Description: This listing features a beautifully preserved fossil shark tooth from the extinct genus Carcharodon, originating from the Eocene deposits found at Ramsholt, Suffolk. The Eocene Epoch was a time of significant evolutionary development in marine life, and the waters surrounding what is now the UK were rich in apex predators, including early mackerel sharks.

The fossil tooth on offer here displays typical morphological features of Carcharodon species from this era: robust structure, pointed apex, and smooth enamel. It represents a transitional lineage in the shark evolutionary tree, showing early traits that would later be refined in modern species like the great white shark.

Geological Insight: The Ramsholt region is a notable site within the London Basin, yielding a variety of marine fossils from the Eocene. Fossils from this site are often found in the Red Crag or reworked from the underlying London Clay, making each piece a valuable specimen of paleoenvironmental history. These formations document a dynamic coastal marine ecosystem, with Carcharodon acting as a top-tier predator.

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
