£24.00

Fossil Type & Species: Carcharodon hastalis (archaic mackerel shark)

Geological Formation: Red Crag Formation (Basement Bed, derived from London Clay)

Age & Period: Eocene Epoch (circa 56 to 34 million years ago)

Locality: Ramsholt, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Description: This listing is for an authentic fossil tooth from the extinct mackerel shark species Carcharodon hastalis. Often referred to as a “broad-toothed mako,” this tooth is a prized find from the Red Crag Basement Bed at Ramsholt in Suffolk. The fossil is derived from the older London Clay deposits and dates to the Eocene period, providing a fascinating glimpse into ancient marine life from approximately 40 to 50 million years ago.

The specimen on offer is the exact tooth shown in the photos. It features good enamel preservation and distinct serration absence, typical of this early ancestor of modern great white sharks. The Red Crag formation is a highly fossiliferous deposit, particularly known for its reworked fossils eroded from the underlying London Clay, giving rise to a range of Eocene marine specimens.

Geology Insight: The Red Crag is a marine deposit known for its rich fossil content, including mollusks, fish, and shark remains. The Basement Bed is particularly significant as it contains reworked fossils that were originally preserved in the London Clay Formation. These fossils, including this Carcharodon hastalis tooth, were transported and redeposited during the early Pleistocene but retain their Eocene origins.

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
