Carcharodontosaurus dinosaur tooth fossil | cretaceous kem kem morocco | genuine w/ coa

Original price was: £288.00.Current price is: £259.20.

Fossil Type & Species: Carcharodontosaurus (large predatory theropod dinosaur)

Geological Formation: Tegana Formation, Kem Kem Beds

Geological Age: Aptian Stage, Early Cretaceous (approx. 125 – 113 million years ago)

Locality: Kem Kem Basin, southeastern Morocco

Detailed Description: This listing offers a genuine fossil tooth from Carcharodontosaurus, one of the most fearsome carnivorous dinosaurs to have roamed prehistoric North Africa. This apex predator, sometimes nicknamed the “African T. rex,” lived during the Early Cretaceous period and is closely related to other giant theropods like Giganotosaurus and Mapusaurus.

The fossil was recovered from the renowned Kem Kem Beds, part of the Tegana Formation, in southeastern Morocco. These red beds are a globally significant fossil locality, preserving a diverse and thriving Cretaceous river ecosystem. The tooth itself features excellent preservation with visible enamel detail and typical curvature indicative of its meat-slicing function.

Geological Insight: The Kem Kem Beds represent fluvial deposits formed in a sprawling deltaic environment that existed around 120 million years ago. The sediments of the Tegana Formation include siltstones, sandstones, and conglomerates that yield an extraordinary fossil assemblage of fish, crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, and multiple species of theropod dinosaurs. Among these, Carcharodontosaurus stood at the top of the food chain, with serrated, blade-like teeth perfectly adapted for tearing flesh.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
