This fossil comes from Wilmington, Devon, an area associated with Cretaceous marine deposits of southern England. The specimen is Cenomanian in age, placing it in the early part of the Upper Cretaceous, approximately 100 to 94 million years ago. During this time, much of southern Britain was submerged beneath warm, shallow to open marine seas, creating ideal conditions for the deposition of calcareous sediments and the preservation of marine fossils.

The Cenomanian marks an important interval in Earth history, when global sea levels were high and marine environments spread widely across Europe. These seas supported a diverse fauna including nautiloids, ammonites, bivalves, echinoids, brachiopods, sponges, fish, and other marine organisms. Fossil Type and Species

Cenoceras inornatum is a nautiloid, a shelled cephalopod related to modern Nautilus, as well as to ammonites, squid, cuttlefish, and octopus. Nautiloids are among the longest-lived and most successful cephalopod groups in the fossil record. Unlike ammonites, which became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, the nautiloid lineage survived and is still represented today by modern chambered nautiluses.

Cenoceras belongs to the order Nautilida, a group characterised by coiled, chambered shells with relatively simple suture patterns. The shell was divided internally into chambers by walls called septa. The living animal occupied the outer body chamber, while the earlier chambers helped control buoyancy through the regulation of gas and fluid. This allowed the nautiloid to move through the water column as an active marine predator or scavenger.

Morphology and Collector Appeal

Cenoceras is recognised for its smooth, rounded, coiled shell and classic nautiloid appearance. The species name inornatum reflects the comparatively plain or unornamented nature often associated with this form, making it very different from many strongly ribbed or spiny ammonites of the same broad era. Cenoceras would have used its chambered shell to control buoyancy, moving through the water column and feeding as part of a complex marine ecosystem.

After death, the shell could settle onto the seabed and become buried by sediment. Over millions of years, compaction and mineralisation transformed the remains into fossil material. This process preserved a direct record of a vanished Cretaceous sea, making the specimen both attractive and scientifically meaningful.
