Otodus obliquus fossil shark tooth – genuine eocene morocco specimen – real fossil with certificate of authenticity

£9.96

These Shark Teeth are from the Otodus species of shark that patrolled the seas of Morocco around the Eocene period ~ 56 to 33.9 million years ago. When a sharks’ teeth become worn the predator will ‘shed’ these teeth, and these will be replaced with new sharper, stronger teeth. However, unlike humans, Sharks are known for re-shedding hundreds of teeth on a regular basis, which makes them a fruitful find with fossil hunters.

About Otodus obliquus and Shark Teeth Fossils:

Sharks, including Otodus, have cartilaginous skeletons which rarely fossilise. However, their teeth—being hard and mineral-rich—are commonly preserved. Sharks continuously shed and replace their teeth throughout their lives, meaning a single shark could lose thousands of teeth in its lifetime.

Because of this, fossil shark teeth are both common and incredibly diverse. Otodus teeth are typically robust, with tall crowns, smooth cutting edges, and broad roots. This genus is believed to have reached lengths of over 9 meters (30 feet), making it a dominant force in the ancient marine food chain.

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
