Description

Genuine Choffaticeras segne Ammonite Fossil

This listing is for a genuine Choffaticeras segne ammonite fossil from the Upper Cretaceous, Lower Turonian, found 30 km north of Goulmima, near Errachidia, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco. This is a carefully chosen fossil specimen, selected for its natural character, collector appeal and connection to one of Morocco’s most famous Cretaceous fossil-bearing regions. The photo shows the actual fossil you will receive, so the colour, preservation, surface texture and overall appearance shown are specific to this individual specimen. For full sizing, please see the photo.

This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card.

Fossil Type and Species

Choffaticeras segne is an extinct ammonite, a marine cephalopod related to the wider ammonoid group. Ammonites were shelled prehistoric animals that lived in ancient seas, using their chambered spiral shells for buoyancy while the living animal occupied the outer body chamber. They are among the most iconic fossils from the Mesozoic Era and are highly valued by collectors, educators and palaeontology enthusiasts.

Scientific classification:

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Mollusca

Class: Cephalopoda

Subclass: Ammonoidea

Order: Ammonitida

Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea

Family: Pseudotissotiidae

Genus: Choffaticeras

Species: Choffaticeras segne

Choffaticeras is a distinctive Cretaceous ammonite genus known from marine deposits of North Africa and surrounding regions. It forms part of the rich ammonite faunas that help palaeontologists understand the evolution, distribution and dating of Cretaceous marine life.

Geological Age and Locality

This specimen dates from the Lower Turonian stage of the Upper Cretaceous Period. The Turonian began after the Cenomanian and represents a time when global sea levels were high and warm marine environments were widespread. During this period, much of what is now Morocco was influenced by shallow to open marine conditions, creating ideal environments for ammonites, fish, marine reptiles and other sea life.

The locality, 30 km north of Goulmima near Errachidia in Drâa-Tafilalet, Morocco, is well known for Cretaceous marine fossils. The Goulmima region is particularly famous for ammonites and other marine fauna preserved in sedimentary deposits formed in ancient seaways. These fossils provide a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric oceans that once covered parts of North Africa.

Morphology and Natural Features

Choffaticeras ammonites are generally recognised for their coiled shell form and robust Cretaceous ammonite appearance. Like other ammonites, the shell was divided internally into a series of chambers separated by septa. These chambers helped the animal regulate buoyancy, allowing it to move through the water column. The outer shell shape, whorl profile, ribbing, ornamentation and suture patterns are important features used by specialists to identify ammonite groups and species.

As a fossil specimen, this Choffaticeras segne may display natural mineralisation, surface texture, matrix, shell detail, weathering, preparation marks or small imperfections. These features are part of the fossil’s geological history and help give each specimen its own individual appearance. The actual fossil shown in the photo is the one supplied, making it especially suitable for collectors who prefer to choose the exact piece they are purchasing.

Ancient Marine Environment

During the Lower Turonian, Choffaticeras segne lived in a warm Cretaceous sea. Ammonites were active marine predators or opportunistic feeders, likely using tentacles to capture small prey in the water. They shared their environment with fish, sharks, marine reptiles, crustaceans, bivalves, gastropods and other ammonites. The sediments around Goulmima and Errachidia preserve evidence of these ancient marine ecosystems, making fossils from this region especially interesting for both display and study.

Moroccan Cretaceous ammonites are popular because they combine strong visual appeal with genuine scientific importance. They represent a vanished group of marine cephalopods that thrived for millions of years before becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period.

Collector Display and Authenticity

This Choffaticeras segne ammonite fossil is ideal for fossil collectors, natural history displays, geology collections, educational use or as a unique prehistoric gift. It is a genuine Upper Cretaceous ammonite from Morocco and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card.

Please see the photo for full sizing and condition details. Natural fossils can vary in preservation and may show signs of age, mineralisation, repairs, preparation, matrix or surface wear, all of which are normal for genuine fossil specimens and add to their individual character.
