Jurassic Geology of Normandy
The fossil dates from the Lower Bajocian, an interval of the Middle Jurassic around 170 million years ago. During this time, the region now forming Normandy lay within a warm, shallow sea. Marine sediments accumulated across the seabed and supported communities of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, belemnites and other organisms. Burial within lime-rich mud and sediment protected some shells from complete destruction and allowed them to enter the fossil record.
The Caen area and wider Calvados department are famous for Jurassic sedimentary rocks. Material from a documented locality provides valuable geological context and connects the specimen directly with the ancient environment in which the ammonite lived. Chondroceras is generally placed within the family Stephanoceratidae and the order Ammonitida. The genus commonly has a robust, evolute to moderately involute shell with well-developed ribbing.
