Description
For sale is an authentic Cleistosphinctes ammonite fossil from the Middle Oxfordian stage of the Jurassic Period, discovered in Charente, France. This beautifully preserved ammonite exhibits the characteristic ribbed shell structure of the Cleistosphinctes genus, a group of extinct marine mollusks that thrived in prehistoric seas over 160 million years ago.
Geology & Fossil Type:
This ammonite originates from the Middle Oxfordian, a stage of the Upper Jurassic, a time when vast shallow seas covered much of what is now Europe. These ammonites flourished in marine environments, their fossilized remains providing critical insights into Jurassic paleoenvironments and ammonoid evolution.
Ammonites, including Cleistosphinctes, belonged to the subclass Ammonoidea, close relatives of modern squids and octopuses. Their coiled, chambered shells were used for buoyancy control, allowing them to navigate ancient oceans efficiently. The finely ribbed, spiral structure of Cleistosphinctes makes it an excellent reference fossil for dating Jurassic rock formations.
