Featuring an exquisite natural preservation, this fossil originates from the Lower Albian Stage of the Early Cretaceous Period (approximately 113 to 110 million years ago) and was discovered in the fossil-rich marine sediments of Mitsinjo, Madagascar.

Geology & Origin:

During the Lower Albian, the region around Mitsinjo was submerged under shallow, warm seas. These conditions led to rapid burial and fossilization of marine creatures such as ammonites. In rare cases, the original shell material, rich in aragonite, was preserved, creating the mesmerizing iridescent “Mother of Pearl” effect seen on this exceptional specimen.

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
